About Split PDF: key facts and tips

Key facts

Documently Split PDF extracts chosen pages from a PDF into new PDF files. In Pick pages mode, each comma-separated range becomes its own file: typing 1-3, 5, 8-end gives three PDFs, with pages 1 to 3, page 5 alone, and page 8 to the last page. The word end always means the final page, so no page count is needed. Every page separately turns a 10-page PDF into 10 single-page PDFs, and several results download together as one ZIP. Pages are copied without re-compression, so text and scans keep their original sharpness. Splitting also helps with size limits: keeping 2 pages of a 6-page scan leaves a third of the pages, and the file shrinks roughly in proportion. The PDF is read and split in the browser and is never uploaded. Check page positions in a PDF viewer first, because printed page numbers can differ, then type the range and tap Split.

Downloaded documents often contain more pages than a form needs. A bank statement may run to 12 pages when you need three, or a single PDF may hold all your certificates when each must be uploaded separately. This tool extracts exactly the pages you want into new PDFs. It works in your browser, keeps the pages at their original quality, and never uploads your file.

When do you need to split a PDF?

Splitting is also the quickest way to meet a size limit when compression alone is not enough. A 6-page scan cut down to the 2 pages a portal asks for is roughly a third of the original size.

  • A portal wants each certificate in its own upload slot, but they are all in one scanned PDF.
  • You need only the last three months of a long bank statement for KYC or a visa file.
  • An answer key, prospectus or notification is huge and you need only the relevant pages.
  • Getting a PDF under a size limit by dropping blank or extra pages.
  • Sharing only the relevant pages of a statement, so you hand over less personal data.

How page ranges work

Each comma-separated part becomes its own PDF. Typing 1-3, 5, 8-end gives three files: pages 1 to 3, page 5 alone, and page 8 through to the last page.

If you want several pages in one file, write them as a single range, like 2-4. Every page separately turns a 10-page PDF into 10 single-page PDFs.

Pages keep their original size and orientation, so a landscape page stays landscape in its new file. To rejoin parts in a different order later, use Merge PDF on the split files.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Check the page numbers in a PDF viewer first; printed page numbers in a document often differ from the actual page position.
  • Use end instead of typing the last page number, so you do not miss a page.
  • Results are still too big? Pass the split file through Compress PDF.
  • Need the pages as images instead? Use PDF to JPG.
  • On phones, a ZIP opens in the Files app; if you need just one result, download that single PDF.

How splitting works in your browser

The tool reads your PDF on your own device and copies the chosen pages into new files without re-compressing them, so text and scans look exactly the same as before.

Nothing is uploaded. Only anonymous counts, such as the tool used and file size, are recorded, never your documents or file names.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract specific pages from a PDF?

Select your PDF, choose Pick pages and type the pages you need, for example 2-4 to get pages 2, 3 and 4 in one file. Tap Split and download the result. It runs in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded.

How do I save each page of a PDF as a separate file?

Choose Every page separately and tap Split. A 10-page PDF becomes 10 single-page PDFs, which download together as one ZIP. You can then upload each page into a different slot on your form.

What does 8-end mean in the page range?

It means from page 8 to the last page of the document, whatever that number is. It saves you from checking the total page count and makes sure no pages at the end are missed.

Does splitting a PDF reduce its quality?

No. The selected pages are copied exactly as they are, without re-compression, so text and scanned images keep their original sharpness. The new files are smaller only because they contain fewer pages.

How do I open the ZIP file on my phone?

On Android, open the Files app, tap the ZIP and choose Extract. On iPhone, tap the ZIP in the Files app and it unpacks into a folder. If you need only one page, download that single PDF instead of the ZIP.
