About Merge PDF: key facts and tips

Key facts

Documently Merge PDF combines 2 to 50 PDF files into one document, in the order chosen with the up and down arrows. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compression, so text, stamps and scans keep their original quality, and the merged file is roughly the sum of the inputs. For example, five scans of 300 KB each make a merged PDF of about 1.5 MB. If the result crosses a portal limit, Compress PDF can bring it down; in our tests, the 500 KB target took a 5.16 MB six-page scan to 284 KB. Photos need converting first with JPG to PDF, and unwanted pages can be removed with Split PDF. Merging happens inside the browser, so no document is uploaded and no watermark is added. When the form gives no order, a safe sequence is application page, ID proof, certificates from the highest qualification down, then other papers. Merge in the order the form lists, open the file once, and upload.

Many application forms give you a single upload slot for all supporting documents. If your marksheets, certificates and ID proof are separate PDFs, you need to combine them first. This tool merges up to 50 PDF files into one in the order you set, keeps every page exactly as it was, and does it all on your device, which keeps personal documents private.

When do you need to combine PDF files?

Uploading one combined file is also easier on a patchy 4G connection: one upload, one progress bar, and one chance to fail instead of five.

  • A university admission or scholarship portal allows one PDF for all certificates.
  • A job application asks for your resume, degree and experience letters as a single attachment.
  • Bank KYC or loan paperwork where address proof, ID and income proof must go together.
  • Keeping all pages of a form that you scanned in parts as one clean document.

How to order documents the way reviewers expect

Put the documents in the sequence the form lists them. If it says nothing, a safe order is: application or cover page, ID proof, educational certificates from the highest qualification down, then experience or other supporting documents.

Reviewers often check dozens of applications in a sitting, so a predictable order helps yours get processed without queries.

Name each file clearly before you start, like 01-id-proof.pdf and 02-10th-marksheet.pdf, so the order is easy to check in the list. Mixing page sizes is fine, but an A4 scan next to a tiny receipt can look odd to a reviewer.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Check the total against the limit before merging: five 300 KB scans already make a file of about 1.5 MB.
  • The merged file is roughly the sum of all inputs. If it crosses the portal limit, compress it afterwards with Compress PDF.
  • Combining photos? Convert them with JPG to PDF first, then merge.
  • Remove unwanted pages before merging with Split PDF, so the final file has only what is asked for.
  • Fix sideways pages with Rotate PDF; rotation is lossless and does not reduce quality.
  • Open the merged PDF once before uploading to confirm every page is there and in order.

Private merging, right in your browser

The files are read and joined on your own phone or computer. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compressing, so text and scans look exactly like the originals.

No document is uploaded or stored. We only record anonymous counts such as the tool used and file size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I merge PDF files on my phone?

Open this page in your mobile browser, select the PDFs from your files, set the order with the ↑ and ↓ buttons, and tap Merge. The combined PDF downloads to your phone. It is free, needs no app, and the files never leave your device.

How many PDFs can I combine at once?

You can merge between 2 and 50 PDF files in one go. Very large files take more memory because everything happens on your device, so on older phones it helps to merge in smaller groups and then merge those results.

Will merging reduce the quality of my documents?

No. Pages are copied into the new PDF as they are, without being re-compressed, so text, stamps and scans keep their original quality. That is also why the merged file is about the size of all the inputs added together.

My merged PDF is too large for the portal. What now?

Open the merged file in Compress PDF and choose a target size, such as 500 KB or 1 MB. Scanned pages shrink the most, and turning on Black & white helps further when colour is not required.

Can I add JPG photos to a merged PDF?

Yes, with one extra step. Convert the photos to a PDF first using JPG to PDF, then add that PDF to the merge list with your other files. Arrange the order and tap Merge to get one complete document.
