Most Indian application forms ask for a passport-size photo, and the shape they mean is commonly 3.5 × 4.5 cm. Online, that size has to be expressed in pixels and kilobytes. This page is preset to 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI with a 100 KB maximum, and you can change the KB limits to match your form. The photo is processed on your phone, never uploaded.
How 3.5 × 4.5 cm becomes 413 × 531 pixels
Pixels depend on DPI (dots per inch). One inch is 2.54 cm, so 3.5 cm is 1.378 inches and 4.5 cm is 1.772 inches. At 300 DPI that works out to 413 × 531 pixels.
At 200 DPI the same photo would be 276 × 354 pixels — still 3.5 × 4.5 cm when printed at 200 DPI. That's why some forms quote different pixel sizes for the same physical photo. If your form gives exact pixels, type those in; switch Units to Centimetres if it gives cm.
Every form sets its own KB limit
There's no single 'passport photo size in KB'. One form may want 20–50 KB, another up to 200 KB. This preset starts with a 100 KB maximum. Change Max size and Min size to whatever your form says.
If the photo ends up too small, the tool safely pads the file up to the minimum without changing the picture. If it's too big, JPEG quality is lowered just enough to fit.
Passport, visa and exam photos aren't all the same
Indian passport-style photos are commonly 3.5 × 4.5 cm, but the Passport Seva portal, visa applications and exam boards each publish their own rules for size, background and face position. Some visas use completely different dimensions. Always check the instructions on your form before you upload.
For major exams, use the exam photo tool — it's preset to each verified notification.
Tips for a photo that won't be rejected
- Plain white or light background, no patterns or shadows behind you.
- Face the camera straight with your shoulders level; both ears visible.
- Light from the front — stand facing a window rather than with it behind you.
- Head and top of shoulders in frame. If the original is wide, turn off Keep proportions: the photo is centre-cropped to the passport shape, never stretched. Use Crop Image first if you want to choose the crop yourself.
- No caps or dark glasses unless the form allows them.
