A 1 MB limit gives you room for long documents: a full thesis, a scanned property file, a complete set of semester marksheets or a detailed application with photos. The challenge is usually a phone scan that has ballooned to 20 or 30 MB. This page is preset to 1 MB and compresses right in your browser, without uploading your files.
What kind of PDFs need to be under 1 MB?
Long and multi-part documents: a dissertation or project report, a scanned sale deed, a full medical file, a company profile, or an application where the form asks for all certificates in one PDF. It is also a practical size for sharing — a 1 MB PDF opens quickly on WhatsApp and doesn't bounce off email attachment limits.
Compressing a 20 MB scan to 1 MB is a 95% reduction, but for scans that's usually achievable with readable pages, because most of the original size is surplus image detail.
Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?
It depends on the website. Some count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, others as 1,048,576 bytes. This preset targets 1,000 KB, which keeps you under the stricter reading of 1 MB. If a portal rejects a file that looks like exactly 1 MB, that difference is usually why.
Keep long documents readable
- Leave colour on for documents with charts, stamps or photos — at 1 MB there's usually room.
- Use Black & white for long typed reports to keep the text extra sharp.
- If one or two pages are huge photos, consider replacing them with smaller images before making the PDF.
- Split a 100-page file into parts if the portal allows multiple uploads; each part will look better.
- Zoom into a table or footnote after compressing to check fine print.
How the tool decides how much to compress
The compressor uses Ghostscript in WebAssembly. It first redraws the images at 150 DPI, which is sharp on screens. Only if the file is still above 1 MB does it drop the resolution further, step by step, down to 40 DPI at the lowest. It stops at the first step that fits, so you get the best quality that meets the limit.
If the PDF is already under 1 MB, you get the original back. If it can't get under 1 MB even at 40 DPI, the result card tells you, and you can split the document or try Black & white.
